COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local boxing gym has moved to Walnut Street + it offers a safe space for kids to belong and develop skills. Community members can check out the new facility and support the positive effort in the area.  WFMZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Diane Wittry will retire after thirty three years when she conducts her final concert in fall 2027 at the Allentown Symphony Orchestra — marking a milestone for the local arts scene.  WFMZ
  • The Moravian Historical Society museum is showing a rare 1834 Stauffer-style Martin and Schatz guitar on long-term loan from C.F. Martin & Co. Inc. Visitors can view the guitar and other early American instruments daily from 1 to 4 p.m. at the museum.  Bethlehem Press
  • David Bennett Cohen, the founding member of Country Joe and The Fish, will lead his trio in a concert on Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. at Godfrey Daniels (7 E. Fourth St.) in Bethlehem; ticket holders from the rescheduled Nov. 28 show need not repurchase their tickets.  Bethlehem Press
  • Record 31 high schools from Northampton, Lehigh, and Warren counties will present spring musicals in less than two months; nominations will be announced at noon May 7 and the awards air live May 21 at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Easton + streamed on WFMZ-TV.  Bethlehem Press
  • The Lucky Star, a play based on Richard Hollander’s book about letters written during WWII, opens today at Pennsylvania Playhouse (390 Illick’s Mill Road, Bethlehem) and will run until Feb. 8 with both evening and matinee shows.  Bethlehem Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State public education received over $900 million from the $50.1 billion budget, but delayed funding has left schools with aging facilities and rising costs. Lawmakers are considering trust funds and tax changes to ease tuition hikes following a $139 increase at public universities.  Bethlehem Press
  • Freedom High School inducted three individuals and one team into its Hall of Fame on January 22, celebrating athletic achievements before a basketball game with Northampton. The honor recognized (Mary Greybush, Seth Watlington, Michael Zito, and the 1987 girls basketball team).  Bethlehem Press

  • A winter storm watch is in effect in Lehigh County from 1:00 a.m. Sunday to 1:00 p.m. Monday — heavy snow and slippery roads may delay the Monday morning commute in Bethlehem.  WFMZ

  • Freedom's girls basketball team beat Stroudsburg 53-22 on Jan. 15 at Freedom after a timeout — the surge built a double-digit lead, and senior Jayleece Baker credited free throws and improved play for the win.  Bethlehem Press
