COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lehigh’s Student Political Action Committee hosted a town hall on Wednesday that directly addressed gun violence in the Lehigh Valley. A panel of local voices (Bethlehem native Al Smalling and County Controller Mark Pinsley) shared personal stories and discussed steps to improve community safety.  The Brown and White
  • The American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania will host a free virtual volunteer information session on Zoom on Feb. 12 to show interested locals how to help during disasters — the organization relies on volunteers for relief efforts from home fires to hurricanes.  WFMZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Record snowfall in January has pushed local repair shops to work overtime; Froehlich's Repair Center in Hellertown fixed 62 snowblowers between Monday and Saturday and Cantelmi Hardware Store reported carburetor issues from old gas (80 percent of repairs). Shops expect more breakdowns as snow hard-packs on surfaces.  WFMZ
  • Lehigh alumna Lauren Farrell launched Jooicy Tits Vodka — a gluten-free spirit made in small batches from non-GMO corn — with 10% of profits going to Move Over Breast Cancer. The brand targets young adults and supports breast cancer awareness.  The Brown and White

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Moravian Historical Society is exhibiting a rare 1834 Stauffer-style Martin and Schatz guitar on permanent display in Nazareth. The instrument, on long-term loan from C.F. Martin and Co. Inc. (echoing early American guitar craft), is viewable daily from 1-4 p.m.  Bethlehem Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Administrators in Bethlehem and nearby areas adjusted school schedules during a week of heavy snow as they balanced safety with class needs (Superintendent Tracy Piazza said on Tuesday night after consulting weather reports and local officials that decisions on snow days, virtual learning, and delays had been made).  WFMZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senators Jarrett Coleman + Nick Miller announced that the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority received a $1.3M state grant to build a new parking garage connected to the airport. The project will expand capacity and ease travel during record-breaking passenger numbers.  Bethlehem Press
  • On Jan. 21, state Senator Lisa Boscola announced that PENNVEST approved ($4.41M) in low interest loans for Bethlehem Township Municipal Authority’s Easton Avenue Flood Mitigation and Sculac Stream Restoration projects. The funds will retrofit stormwater basins and restore 2,800 feet of Sculac Road stream channel to help prevent dangerous flooding.  Bethlehem Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bethlehem Catholic’s Hawks (9-1) prepare to compete in the District 11 tournament at Freedom on Saturday as the third seed with a potential rematch with Emmaus looming after their December loss; coach Mike Cole says a week of rest has made the team mentally ready.  Bethlehem Press
  • Lehigh Athletics’ multimedia department grew from 3 students in 2021 to 22, who now produce broadcasts, podcasts, photography, and ESPN+ coverage. The department uses student talent and new technology to boost its digital presence (and maintain a unified athletic brand).  The Brown and White
  • Bethlehem Catholic athletes show a strong start as the girls' basketball team posted a 13-2 record and the boys' wrestlers improved to 8-1 after break; the school also kicked off Catholic Schools week on Monday, Jan. 26 & held prayer and tasting events to celebrate community spirit.  Bethlehem Press
  • At the EPC girls wrestling championships held last weekend, Liberty finished fourth behind Parkland, Nazareth and Emmaus. The team earned six medalists and will face Freedom Wednesday at their facility ahead of the District 11 tournament on Feb. 14.  Bethlehem Press
