COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Coalition for Appropriate Transportation opened its new office in the Walnut Street Garage (33 W Walnut St.) on Jan. 24, nearly doubling its space to offer more help for walkers, bikers and public transit users. The nonprofit will work with local agencies to improve Bethlehem’s transit routes.  The Brown and White
  • Churches in Easton warn parishioners that scammers posing as priests are sending texts+emails+Facebook messages asking for cash or gift cards while advising people that official requests come only from a priest or bishop.  WFMZ
  • Lehigh Valley florists are working hard to prepare for Valentine's Day by ordering flowers, re-cutting blooms, and scheduling thousands of deliveries, with Rich Mar Florist expecting a busy Saturday. They are continuing early mornings and late nights to ensure red roses reach loved ones on time.  WFMZ

  • Billy’s Homemade Candies in Muhlenberg Township is preparing for a busy Valentine’s week by prepping chocolate-covered strawberries and extending hours on Valentine’s Saturday. The shop, a local gem since 1935, anticipates more customers as the holiday picks up.  WFMZ
  • Hive Local Marketplace closed its two Lehigh Valley sites on Monday, Feb. 9 amid a cash flow crisis and unpaid vendor balances (27 E. Belvidere St. in Nazareth and a location near Promenade Saucon Valley). Owner Makayla Adams said she is working with legal and financial advisors to address pending claims and support vendors.  Lehigh Valley Live

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bethlehem resident Taryn Hipp will lead a zine-making workshop (held at Northampton Community College’s East 40 Garden) today at 6 p.m. to mark the 30th anniversary of her first zine; participants will craft their own magazine and receive a copy of Stolen Sharpie Revolution.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Daniel Collins from Lehigh’s Office of University Communications won a 2025 Mid-Atlantic Regional Emmy Award for his documentary Paul J. Stankard: Flower & Flame (a film profiling the renowned glass artist’s work and legacy).  The Brown and White
  • Grammy-winning Grupo Niche will headline Musikfest’s preview night on Thursday, July 30 at the Wind Creek Steel Stage at PNC Plaza in Bethlehem. ArtsQuest Members gain ticket access starting Tuesday, Feb. 10 before general sales open Friday, Feb. 13.  Lehigh Valley Live

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • St. Luke’s University Health Network purchased the former St. John’s Windish Evangelical Lutheran Church at 617 E. 4th St for $750,000 — the deed was recorded Feb. 3 in Southside Bethlehem. The health network is finalizing plans to use the building to support community health initiatives.  WFMZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • First-year Abbi Cooper won the 117-pound championship at the Pennsylvania Collegiate Wrestling Championships on Jan. 24 at East Stroudsburg University and is ranked fifth nationally; she plans to compete in the NCAA championships in Coralville, Iowa from March 6-7.  The Brown and White
  • Bethlehem native Alex Price qualified for the US Olympic Marathon Trials when he finished the California International Marathon on Dec. 7 — his time was 2:15:24. He now trains with local teams to prepare for the trials on Mar. 25, 2028.  The Brown and White
  • Junior captain Nasir Whitlock surpassed 1,000 career points on Wednesday night as Lehigh won 90-82 over American. Whitlock finished with 33 points (including a key 3-pointer early in the second half) and Lehigh will face Lafayette on Saturday in Easton.  The Brown and White
