COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bethlehem's Main Street is named as one of the best in the nation by USA Today and local voters can choose it as one of the top 10 every day until April 7 at noon — as of Thursday it was ranked #10 among 20 main streets picked by travel experts for their living history, culture and community life. This contest comes just after Hotel Bethlehem won its fourth Best Historic Hotel title.  WFMZ
  • Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley and Latino Leadership Alliance have announced a merger—an official announcement and a new youth program are set for early next month to expand services in Bethlehem. The combined organization will bring together community programs including a food pantry, senior center, and workforce development initiatives to better support local families.  WFMZ

CRIME NEWS

  • A jury in Bethlehem convicted Alkiohn Dunkins for killing 18-year-old Tyrell Holmes when he was stabbed and set on fire near Parkhurst Apartments in 2018.  WFMZ
  • A jury in Northampton County began deliberating Thursday in the trial of Alkiohn Dunkins — a former Moravian football player from Easton charged with the stabbing and burning death of 18-year-old Tyrell Holmes outside Parkhurst Apartments in Bethlehem in April 2018 — following closing arguments by both sides.  WFMZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Northampton County is closing the eastern half of Institute Drive for several weeks starting Friday until April 25 to help amphibians travel safely to breeding pools in Totts Gap Conservation Area — a half-mile connector between Totts Gap Road and Blue Mountain Drive.  Lehigh Valley Live

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced that lane closures at the I-78 Toll Bridge’s Express E-ZPass facility have been postponed due to forecasts of thunderstorms, heavy rains, and strong winds—conditions that would impact the pouring and curing of new concrete roadway slabs. The work will be rescheduled for next week with a new travel advisory to follow.  WFMZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ben Austin, a 12-year-old cancer survivor from Forks Township now in remission, and his family will host a bake sale at Forks Elementary on Thursday to raise $500 for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer—a charity that has funded over $23 million in research for children’s cancer.  WFMZ

  • Eleven athletes with Lehigh Valley ties will compete in the NCAA Division I wrestling championships in Philadelphia from March 20 to 22—seven of them, including Lehigh’s Owen Trephan who is seeded No. 4 at 285 pounds, have earned top-eight spots.  Lehigh Valley Live
