COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Brown and White took a stroll on the South Side to talk with residents about local changes—community members shared how Bethlehem is growing with new attractions like the casino and ice skating rink while enjoying church events and Spanish festivals. Locals also expressed a desire for more walkable spaces such as museums and libraries as the area evolves.  The Brown and White

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry released a report for February that showed the unemployment rate stayed at 3.8% while nonfarm jobs dropped by 1,000. The report said the civilian labor force fell by 3,000 and education & health services added 4,700 jobs in the month.  WFMZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Heather Johnson has taught sociology at Lehigh for over two decades and builds strong bonds with her students through community-based teaching. Her passion started at Colby College and she uses techniques — like 'Heather's Life Lessons' — to help students see how sociological thinking can change lives.  The Brown and White

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lehigh’s campus faces environmental concerns as too much salt on sidewalks and roads flows into local waterways and harms native plants. University officials and environmental advocates said staff training and testing a chloride free alternative called Entry will help reduce runoff.  The Brown and White

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT announced it will begin a retaining wall project on Route 611 in Williams Twp on Tuesday, April 1, and the road will be reduced to one lane between Browns Drive and Saylors Lane with alternating traffic controlled by signals. The work, which includes slope restoration and road reconstruction near the Delaware Canal, is expected to slow traffic through fall and be completed in September 2026—PKF-Mark III Inc is the general contractor.  WFMZ
  • UGI has planned gas replacement projects in Bethlehem that will start April 1 and run Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the work will affect travel on Seneca and South Bergan streets with the first project finishing late April and on East 3rd, South New, Columbia & Adams streets with the second project set to finish mid-May while weather and work conditions may change dates.  WFMZ
