CULTURE NEWS

  • Bethlehem is hosting its 11th annual Cherry Blossom Festival — cherry blossom trees bloom with pink petals as displays of Japanese culture are showcased.  WFMZ
  • At the Nazareth Center for the Arts, the 'Pathways of Color' exhibition opened to show art and music themed around color by three local artists who founded a creative group. The show will run until April 27 — a closing event is scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  WFMZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lehigh’s Office of Inclusive Excellence and Belonging hosted its annual forum to boost student engagement and belonging—about 60 staff and faculty joined—to outline plans including a consistent prayer space for Muslim students and a Black cultural center. Attendees reviewed surveys that showed rising student connection since 2020 and discussed future efforts to strengthen inclusion.  The Brown and White

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • LehighValleyNews.com announced four free debates ahead of the May 20 primary election—featuring contested races for Allentown and Bethlehem mayors as well as for Northampton and Lehigh County executives—and plans for the events to be broadcast live. The Allentown mayor debate is set for 6 p.m. April 17 at Miller Symphony Hall while the Bethlehem mayor debate will begin at 6 p.m. April 28 at Univest Public Media Center in Bethlehem—Northampton and Lehigh County executive debates will follow at 7 p.m. April 30 and 7 p.m. May 7 at the same venue.  WLVR
  • Bethlehem officials are moving forward with a plan to replace nearly 200 aging public housing units at Pembroke Village with mixed-income units, said Mayor J. William Reynolds. The city will soon work with a developer to secure state and federal funding and later apply for another Choice Neighborhood grant (up to $50 million) to support the revamp.  Lehigh Valley News
  • At a Bethlehem City Council meeting on Tuesday, 10 residents raised concerns about removal notices on homeless encampments and a rumored sweep that health officials said was not happening while also questioning immigration policies and the lack of affordable housing. Council members also discussed a drive-through zoning proposal for Eighth Avenue and approved a spot zoning change on W. Garrison St. — with the next meeting set for April 15 at 7 p.m.  The Brown and White

SPORTS NEWS

  • Trout season began in Pennsylvania on Saturday—anglers saw more than 3.2 million trout stocked in 691 streams and 130 lakes while New Jersey opened its season with nearly 570,000 trout; anglers 16 and older must have a license and follow daily catch limits. This season will run through Labor Day with different limits for the extended season starting Sept. 2.  Lehigh Valley Live
