COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bethlehem City officials and state Rep. Steve Samuelson held a ribbon-cutting on Thursday to unveil long-awaited upgrades at Saucon Park after Hurricane Ada caused flooding in fall 2021 — a $200,000 grant helped the city repair pavilions, add new swing sets, ADA features, a ping-pong table, and a spinner.  WFMZ
  • Bethlehem officials held a ribbon-cutting at Saucon Park on William Street—using a $200K state grant to pay for new equipment and work such as an ADA swing set, ping pong table, spinner, sensory space, climbing gear, a renovated creek wall and tree improvements—on April 10. Park pavilions will be available for rent for the first time since Hurricane Ida flooded the area in 2021 with reservations opening this weekend for the 2025 season from April 12 to Oct. 5 while the city finalizes design work for a connection to the Saucon Rail Trail.  Lehigh Valley News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eleventh graders from Lincoln Leadership Academy visited Lehigh University on Thursday morning — where they met college undergrads and explored engineering research including a live demonstration of a five-million-pound universal testing machine. The visit, part of Lehigh’s 20th Undergraduate Research Symposium, provided students a hands-on view of science and technology careers.  WFMZ
  • An editorial said that Lehigh University should open its library to South Side residents by lowering fees or offering cards based on addresses to help ease rising housing prices and the loss of community spaces. The piece compared the university to others that limit access—warning that restricting books hurts local learning—while urging Lehigh to share its resources more openly.  The Brown and White
  • Lehigh University said that on Thursday some international students had their visas revoked after their immigration records were terminated in the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System— the school is now working with the affected students to explain available options.  WFMZ
  • Today, Lehigh University announced by email that the visas of a few international students have been revoked after their records in the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System were terminated—officials clarified the decision was unrelated to protest activity. The university is helping affected students with available resources and has set a campus protocol in case federal officers appear—further updates are expected.  The Brown and White
  • Moravian University announced a new institute to help people learn about the city's Moravian history and culture after its church settlements earned World Heritage status. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Government Efficiency cancelled the $13M contract for the Local Food Purchasing Assistance Program last month—intended to support local farmers by supplying fresh produce to Lehigh Valley food banks. Second Harvest Food Bank said funding cuts will take effect in August and may force the non-profit and local farms like Twin Maple Farms to adjust their spending and operations.  The Brown and White
  • Today, the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency announced $4.7 million to fund seven mixed-use projects — including one in Bethlehem that will remove blight and create or rehabilitate 62 homes plus 18,065 square feet of commercial space.
