ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On May 9, horsehair worms were spotted waving on lilac shrubs in Northeast Bethlehem—experts confirmed they parasitize insects and are harmless to people and pets. The strands measured up to a foot long and were noted during a light spring rain.  Lehigh Valley Live

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Treasurer Stacy Garrity said her office has returned 500 military medals and memorabilia to veterans and their families since 2021—this includes dog tags from a Bethlehem safe deposit box, and her team continues to search for more rightful owners.  WLVR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northwestern Lehigh’s softball team rallied on Saturday morning at Patriots Park in Allentown when freshman Natalie Conner hit a walk-off RBI double to give the Tigers a 5-4 win over Tamaqua. The team will play in the District 11 Class 4A championship game on Tuesday at Parkland High School—sending them into the state tournament if they win.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • The Notre Dame Crusaders overcame a six-run deficit with an eight-run rally on Saturday for an 8—6 victory over Central Catholic in the District 11 Class 3A semifinals at Weiland Park. The team will face Palmerton in the final Tuesday at 4 p.m. — a game that shows their strong comeback spirit.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Whitehall High School's baseball team defeated Pocono Mountain East 9-3 on May 24th during the District 11 5A semifinals at DeSales University’s Weiland Park—erasing an early deficit and securing a win. The team now advances to the district final to face Bangor Tuesday at 7 p.m.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Bangor upset Southern Lehigh 5-2 in the District 11 Class 5A semifinals at DeSales University’s Weiland Park Saturday as Jaxson Kreider returned and went 4-for-4 to spark the win. Bangor will meet Whitehall at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the district final — a key step toward their first title ever — as they aim to secure a championship victory.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Liberty High School’s baseball team won a 1-0 game against rival Freedom on May 25 — advancing to the District 11 final on Wednesday where they will face the Parkland-Nazareth winner — and secured a berth in the PIAA 6A tournament.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Parkland's girls track team broke an 18-year-old regional record on Saturday when Lucy Tobia, Cierra Valley, Dhaniya Miner and Kaley Seide won the 400-meter relay in 47.41 seconds at Shippensburg University—three of the runners and Ana Gbur then finished third in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:52.77, marking the second fastest regional performance. The wins added historic value to the team's overall showing at the PIAA 3A championships.  Lehigh Valley Live
