  • Lisa Lipyanic of Wind Gap uses her nursing skills to deliver medical care and supplies in Philadelphia’s Kensington area where she helps homeless people struggling with drug addiction. Motivated by her brother’s death from drug-related issues last May, she plans to form a nonprofit to support the Lehigh Valley—over 90 donated items have already helped—and she continues her regular trips to aid those in need.  Lehigh Valley Live

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews rescued eight people wearing life jackets from the Lehigh River near the Bowmanstown Boat Ramp early Tuesday morning around 1 a.m.+officials said conditions were not released and the Fish and Boat Commission is investigating the incident.  WFMZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Frank Alvarado, LVEDC’s Director of Research and Data Management, earned the Certified Economic Research Professional certification from The Council for Community+Economic Research, making him one of only four researchers in Pennsylvania with the honor; he presented his work on the Hot Careers Dashboard and submitted a portfolio to show his research and data storytelling skills.  Lehigh Valley Economic Development

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The 7th Annual Lehigh Valley Internship Summit will take place on July 23 at DeSales University and will feature a keynote address by Carly Chase who serves as VP at U.S. News & World Report—she will share her research on what interns want from their workplaces. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Keystone Cement Co.'s hazardous waste permit was renewed by the DEP, letting the facility switch from truck to rail delivery of waste with no start date announced. Local residents expressed concerns during an October hearing — officials emphasized that rail transport is 50 times safer than truck haulage — and the permit is valid until May 7.  Lehigh Valley News
  • Bethlehem and Allentown achieved gold status in the Bird Town Pennsylvania program, which recognizes the cities for completing key conservation steps to protect birds and their habitats & drive further environmental projects. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bethlehem City Council approved a zoning change last week for a 4-acre portion of an 11-acre parcel at 1401 Eighth Ave to allow a car wash and drive-thru restaurant by-right—developer Dennis Benner said the change shifts the area from Mixed Use Commercial to Commercial Shopping Center to match nearby Price Rite zoning. The vote was 5-2 with two council members dissenting.  Lehigh Valley News
  • PennDOT announced Tuesday that $1.3M is available in a School Bus Safety Grant Program — designed to help school bus contractors, school entities, and municipalities improve bus safety and training. Applications will be accepted online beginning June 2 until 12 a.m. July 3.  WFMZ
