COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lehigh Valley Zoo announced that longtime lynx Selma was euthanized due to kidney disease after nearly 10 years at the zoo. Staff will closely monitor her companion Sasquatch & help him adjust to the loss.  WFMZ
  • Wind Creek hosted a fundraising event in support of the Latino community and honored Perla Lopez + her work with the Hispanic Center. The event aimed to strengthen community ties and support local families.  WFMZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Allentown Band will perform two Flag Day concerts on June 6 at Musikfest Café in Bethlehem and on June 14 at Christ Lutheran Church in Allentown, while the Bach Choir of Bethlehem celebrated America’s 250th birthday on May 27 at Coca-Cola Park. The concerts honor veterans and national pride.  Bethlehem Press
  • The Pennsylvania Playhouse presents Spring Awakening — a Tony Award winning rock musical — from May 29 to June 14 at its Bethlehem theater; PA Shakespeare Festival’s Play On! Community Tour will show free performances of As You Like It at local parks and libraries starting May 29.  Bethlehem Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) urges residents to leave young wildlife undisturbed during the spring birthing season, noting that mothers stay nearby to protect their young. Officials warn that intervening may harm animals and expose people to diseases.  Bethlehem Press
  • On Friday, May 29, a Bell OH-58 Jet Ranger helicopter sprayed Vectobac 12AS along the Delaware River — from Washington Crossing in Bucks County to Slateford in Northampton County. The operation targeted black flies and did not affect areas beyond the river.  Lehigh Valley Live

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local music therapists from St. Luke’s University Health Network co-authored a 213-page wellness book titled Creative DBT Activities for Children Using Music to share methods for mindfulness, emotional skills, and distress tolerance for counselors and teachers. SPORTS NEWS

  • The Valley Preferred Cycling Center celebrated 50 years by kicking off Friday night in Upper Macungie Township. The venue (built by Bob Rodale) attracted international and local cyclists through high-speed racing and community showings.  WFMZ
  • This past weekend, Liberty’s Anthony Otero, Elizabeth McClarin and Freedom’s Natalie Ray earned top 8 medals at the PIAA Class 3A Track Championships (held at Shippensburg University). Otero was seventh in long jump, McClarin was seventh in the 800 meter run and Ray finished eighth in the 400 meter dash.  Bethlehem Press
  • Freedom’s volleyball season ended last week when the Pates lost to Emmaus in four games (set scores: 25 to 22, 25 to 17, 23 to 25, and 29 to 27) during the district semifinals; Emmaus advanced to the finals while Freedom closed the season at 18 to 3.  Bethlehem Press
