COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bargain hunters are gathering today at Broughal Middle School athletic field for The Great SouthSide Sale—donated items from Lehigh students are available at cash-only prices with proceeds funding local youth programs. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  WFMZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A team of experienced food entrepreneurs purchased the former Buca di Beppo at 714 Grape St. in Whitehall for $1.15 million. The group will fully renovate the 1.7-acre property and add 3,000 square feet to open an international market and kitchen by Thanksgiving — an initiative expected to create 20 to 25 new jobs.  Lehigh Valley News

CRIME NEWS

  • A 30-year-old man was charged with felony strangulation after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, threatened her with a rifle and barricaded himself in a home on North New Street on June 5th, leading to a three-hour police standoff that ended with his surrender at 4 p.m.—he was then held at Northampton County Prison with bail set at $25,000.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • A man from the Birdsboro area was convicted in a human trafficking sting operation and will face a sentence of 28 to 57 years (in state prison).  WFMZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Moravian University will open its new 70,000-square-foot Haupert Union Building this fall at Main Street North Campus to support student wellness and academic life. The $45 million facility—financed with tax-exempt municipal bonds and donations—will include a health center, career resources, and spaces for student activities.  Lehigh Valley News
  • Arts Academy Charter Middle School dedicated its building to honor outgoing executive director William Fitzpatrick — who has led the school since it opened in 2012 — and unveiled a plaque with his image while new executive director Karl Eisenhart will take over on July 1.  WLVR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Thursday night’s council meeting, officials reviewed an audit that found less than half of the $5 million in ARPA funds went toward Gracedale employee bonuses and raised concerns over unchecked overtime spending. Don Cunningham from LVEDC presented economic data showing strong job growth and rising incomes in the Lehigh Valley — stirring further debate over county oversight.  WFMZ
