CRIME NEWS

  • Two Hellertown men were accused of trying to send fentanyl, LSD, and cocaine through USPS—police said they were arrested on June 5, arraigned on charges of possession with intent to deliver, and are held on $100,000 cash bail while facing potential additional charges from search warrant results.  WFMZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Lehigh Valley faces severe storms and rising heat as temperatures climb into the 80s and near 90 with high humidity causing gusty winds and potential urban flooding—weather experts warn residents to take precautions. After a brief break Friday, heat and humidity will rise over the weekend and into early next week—Monday and Tuesday are forecast to hit the mid to high 90s with heat indices above 100.  Lehigh Valley News

  • Hunters can apply for antlerless deer permits Monday, June 23, as the Pennsylvania Game Commission has allocated 1,312,000 tags—a record increase to help reduce whitetail numbers statewide. Residents are guaranteed their first choice of Wildlife Management Units for 21 days while nonresident sales begin at 8 a.m. on July 14 in four rounds with special limits in WMUs 5C and 5D.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Captain Matthew Griffin, a Bethlehem firefighter with more than 18 years of experience, was chosen as the new fire chief and emergency management coordinator; his first day is July 4 — replacing retiring Chief Michael Reich after over 20 years of service.  Lehigh Valley News
  • Paul Miller’s Law now makes it illegal to use a handheld cellphone while driving, even when stopped at red lights or in parking lots, and police have begun pulling over drivers with written warnings.   • Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds said he learned about 17 ICE arrests on the South Side last week and called the process 'an American tragedy' due to the lack of clear information from federal officials—raising concerns about local transparency.   • Bethlehem city officials and residents expressed concern after ICE arrested 17 workers at Five 10 Flats last week for alleged immigration violations—city leaders at Tuesday’s council meeting urged quick action to adopt a welcoming city ordinance.   • Today, the Lehigh Valley Transportation Study approved nearly $2.6 million for six local projects that will boost children's education, improve bike and pedestrian safety and extend trails in Bethlehem, Allentown and Easton—each selected from 74 proposals after a three-month review process. The projects are part of the federally funded Transportation Alternatives Setaside Program for the 2025–2026 funding cycle and aim to meet regional goals for safer, connected communities.  WFMZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tick season is in full swing in the Valley as researchers note that the invasive Asian longhorned tick—able to produce offspring without a male—has been present since before 2017, though it has not been shown to transmit human diseases.
