Good morning, Bethlehem. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 3rd of August.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Riley Green headlined Musikfest on Friday at the Steel Stage in Bethlehem and performed for 6,500 fans as his set moved from a slow start to energetic numbers. He mixed familiar hits with fresh arrangements—adding a local twist to a classic track that resonated with the crowd.  Lehigh Valley News
  • The Avett Brothers headlined Musikfest on Saturday night at the Wind Creek Steel Stage in Bethlehem and impressed the crowd with their folk-rock set. The festival runs through Aug. 10th—fans experienced a blend of Americana sounds throughout the event.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Musikfest Fest in Show drew music fans yesterday in Bethlehem as free stage shows brought lively music to the city — headliner polka favorite Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra performed at noon on Festplatz — adding to the festival’s dynamic lineup of local acts.  Lehigh Valley News
  • The Saint Marco Society festival in Berks County is celebrating Italian heritage—featuring homemade lasagna and meatball subs for visitors to enjoy.  WFMZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildlands Conservancy permanently protected 2,511 acres in Carbon County using a $1 million grant from the Open Space Institute to safeguard water quality and wildlife habitats. The easement in Penn Forest and Kidder townships includes Mud Run—an important coldwater fishery that feeds the Lehigh River.  WLVR
  • Local residents may see bird feeders less used this summer because wild birds find plenty of natural food like insects, berries, and nectar in yards and parks. Homeowners might also notice lighter new growth on trees, blooming hydrangeas, and sightings of eastern spadefoot toads and birds that use ants to remove parasites.  Lehigh Valley Live

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts say wildfire smoke can travel far and lower air quality for people with asthma or heart issues—Bethlehem residents should check local air quality reports. They are advised to stay indoors if the air is bad and use N95 masks when going outside—using air filters at home can help keep the air clean.  WFMZ
