COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Bethlehem police and fire unions held their annual 9/11 Memorial Softball Game to honor first responders and those who lost their lives—a tradition that has united them for over 20 years.  WFMZ
  • DeSales University remembered its 2000 graduate Dan Gallagher who was killed on 9/11 while working at Cantor Fitzgerald, and a conference room was dedicated while a memorial fund raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in his honor. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day — a reminder of the lasting impact of the terror attacks.  WFMZ
  • 15-year-old junior firefighter Jaxson Lutz, who recently had his right hip replaced after a broken leg, got a surprise visit from Bethlehem Township Fire Department firefighters who arrived in fire trucks—bringing a basket of goodies since he could not come to the station. His mother said the kind gesture meant a lot during his recovery.  WFMZ
  • Community members gathered by the University Center flagpole (6 a.m.) on Sept. 11 to lay 2,977 flags in honor of the attacks’ victims, with the ROTC Steel Battalion leading the annual ceremony organized by the Student Senate.   • Bethlehem businesswoman Yuliya Semenovych, owner of Elixir Health and Wellness, won the third annual Penn State Lehigh Valley LaunchBox Ladies’ pitch competition on June 25 at PSU-LV where she received a $2,500 grand prize. Her business, located at 1021 Main St., also earned the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber’s 2025 Emerging Business Award—showing its rapid growth in non-invasive health therapies based on Eastern European protocols.  Bethlehem Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bev Conklin will perform with her band, the BC Combo, at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Sellersville Theater—24 W. Temple Avenue as she presents her new CD 'Glass Half Full.' The album is dedicated to Dave Smith, whose loss in 2019 inspired his brother to write songs about hope and healing.  Bethlehem Press
  • At Musikfest 2025, the classic band Chicago headlined on Aug 5 at the Wind Creek Steel Stage at PNC Plaza — playing hits like Colour My World and Saturday in the Park. The Black Crowes, celebrating their 40th anniversary tour, performed on Aug 4 with songs such as She Talks to Angels.  Bethlehem Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday night, the Bethlehem Planning Commission advanced the city's five year $102M capital plan that directs spending on roads, public safety, recreation and community facilities. The plan will include street upgrades next year and projects for a family shelter and community center funded by federal and state grants — bonds and fees.  WFMZ
  • On Thursday, the Bethlehem Planning Commission reviewed a sketch plan for six townhomes at 1224 Eaton Ave that would share the lot with a single-family home. Planners recommended demolishing the house and changing the layout to add parking and improve the driveway—more detailed comments will come during the land development review.  WFMZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bethlehem community leaders will host the 'Shave for the Brave' event to raise funds for child cancer research—organizers say the fundraiser will help support families facing the disease.  WFMZ
  • Today, Jefferson and Lehigh Valley Health Network celebrate one year since joining forces to expand local care by opening a new Women’s Health Center at Tower Place in Bethlehem and enhanced services in Allentown. The integrated system has introduced advanced treatments like CAR-T cell therapy—promising further improvements with planned expansions at neighborhood hospitals and additional care centers.  Bethlehem Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Luke Stanich — a Lehigh wrestler — won the gold medal in the 65kg category at the U20 Wrestling World Championships in Bulgaria. He overcame an early deficit in his match to secure a comeback win with a final score of 18 to 8 as coach Zach Rey praised his strong work ethic.  The Brown and White
  • Decorated athlete Talitha Diggs returned to the Lehigh Valley to support her favorite causes as she appeared on 69 News at Sunrise on Thursday. She discussed her partnership with Lehigh Valley Reilly Children's Hospital and her role as an Impact Athlete with the Lehigh Valley Health Network—offering advice to students about balancing sports and school.  WFMZ
