BUSINESS NEWS

  • Representatives of Steel Ice Center told the Bethlehem Planning Commission on Oct 9 that they plan to expand the facility by adding a third ice rink and more gym space to meet growing demand. The expansion includes a 34,000-square-foot addition featuring a new rink and a 6,000-square-foot fitness center—city planners welcomed the proposal and will review parking and pedestrian safety options.  WFMZ
  • Ecopax LLC is expanding its Bethlehem facility at Lehigh Valley Industrial Park VII by building a 104,328-square-foot addition that will create up to 20 new jobs and boost sustainable food packaging production — J.G.   • Kit Keating, a business management major at Lehigh, started RenewBluSurf in 2021 to make 100% organic surf products that help protect oceans—she gives 10% of sales to the Jetty Rock Foundation and hosts local surf events—to promote sustainable practices.  The Brown and White

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Center for Cultural Engagement in South Bethlehem honored Iris Sànchez Cintron during Hispanic Heritage Month for her long teaching career and work in minority affairs with the Bethlehem Area School District. Cintron shared her journey from a childhood dream at Lehigh to becoming a leader who helps share Hispanic culture — a role that has made a difference in our community.  The Brown and White
  • Yesterday, about 40 people gathered at Lehigh University for Voces y Ritmos — a Hispanic Heritage Month event that featured poetry, music and traditional foods and allowed both students and local residents to share creative works. Guest poet Jose Eduardo Cornelio opened the readings with a poem from his book Musica Concretta that linked art with cultural history.  The Brown and White

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Veronika Vostinak, Allentown's sustainability coordinator, presented plastic reduction strategies at a Lehigh Valley Environmental Advisory Council meeting in Bethlehem Wednesday—more than a dozen council members attended. She explained that targeting disposable foodware in dine-in restaurants may lead to pilot projects and future legislation in the Valley.  WLVR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bethlehem has spent two years working with residents to plan updates for Pembroke Village and will apply for $30M to $50M in federal grants to create safer streets—build new playgrounds and update homes. City officials said work will move forward even without the additional funding, and residents remain hopeful.  WFMZ
  • On Thursday, the Bethlehem Planning Commission heard a sketch plan from the Cathedral Church of the Nativity to expand its parking lot—this move aims to improve visitor access. The church's proposal will be reviewed in future meetings for further action.  WFMZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Teamsters and Representative Deluzio held a rally today to support keeping a local community health care facility open as health care workers fought back against an alleged illegal move to close the clinic—protesters urged officials to take swift action to secure its future.  WFMZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Gateway on Fourth—the 120-unit affordable housing project in Bethlehem—received $16 million in tax credits from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency board to fund the first phase, which includes 60 rental units with a mix of mid-rise apartments and townhomes. Construction will begin late 2026 and the project will offer affordable options to residents earning 20–60% of the median income.  Lehigh Valley News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lehigh will send two wrestlers—Sheldon Seymour and Max Brignola—to compete in 10 bouts at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at Rutgers’ Jersey Mikes Arena. Seymour secured his spot after defeating top-seeded Luke Lilledahl in a 125-pound quarterfinal at the NCAA Division I wrestling championship at the Wells Fargo Center.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • First-year forward Savannah Conner came from Ohio to join Lehigh's women's soccer team, scoring in matches against New Jersey Institute of Technology and Drexel University + she is overcoming an early injury with support from teammates + and plans to improve her game further.  The Brown and White
  • Freedom’s senior Jacob Hauze boosted the Patriots with strong leadership after a slow start by juking an opponent on Sept. 6 and now leads the team as they face Northampton tonight at 7 at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium—boosting their comeback momentum.  Lehigh Valley Live
