COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Area nonprofits will gather at the second annual Nonprofit Impact Conference on Nov. 6 at Wind Creek from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event—organized by the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley and featuring keynote speaker David Brown—aims to help nonprofit leaders make connections and learn from each other.  WFMZ
  • Two local nonprofits have partnered to help survivors of sex trafficking by offering job training at the Pennsylvania 2-1-1 hotline; Bloom for Women + United Way say three women will begin training in November to boost their confidence and work skills.  WFMZ

  • Jared Isaacman, founder of Shift4 and a leader in space travel, spoke yesterday at Zoellner Arts Center during Lehigh University’s Future Makers series. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Menzingers will play at Archer Music Hall in Allentown at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24 with tickets costing $46.05 for general admission and $71 for balcony seats* the punk band will mark 20 years in 2026 as part of the Pennsylvania’s Own series.  Lehigh Valley News
  • Lehigh’s Thrift and Upcycling Club was launched last spring by Lily Wu and Bryn Fayle to help students turn old clothes into creative items and learn upcycling skills. The club holds regular trips and workshops at Wilbur Powerhouse and plans fundraisers to offer affordable, sustainable fashion options — drawing growing interest from students.  The Brown and White
  • ArtsQuest officials announced that B. Braun Medical will sponsor a new gallery and lounge at the ArtsQuest Creative Factory — a cultural center under construction at the old Banana Factory site that will host adult English programs, family workshops and other cultural learning opportunities in partnership with Bethlehem Area School District. Construction of the 78,500-square-foot building led by Boyle Construction is expected to be completed in the second quarter.  Lehigh Valley News

  • LVEDC adopted a new Strategic Plan 2025 to 2027 in May to recruit companies in high-value industries, reuse old industrial sites and build regional partnerships to strengthen the local economy. The plan targets sectors such as life sciences, advanced manufacturing, creative services and food processing — and it aims to boost talent development while addressing issues like housing affordability and childcare.  Lehigh Valley Economic Development

  • Lehigh announced that Brigid Benicasa starts today as its new Equal Opportunity and Title IX Officer (she has more than 10 years of civil rights, education and public service experience from her work at the Department of Justice and the University of Washington).  The Brown and White

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Celestial events brighten October skies as Comet Lemmon appears in the west about 30 to 60 minutes after sunset and Comet SWAN rises in the east before dawn, with the Orionid meteor shower set to peak after midnight around Oct. 21—stargazers are advised to use binoculars and check local forecasts for dark skies.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • At the 10th Lehigh Valley Watershed Conference held at Ben Franklin Technology Partners' TechVentures on Lehigh University's Mountaintop campus, botany professor Daniel C. Laughlin said Tuesday that ecosystem restoration should focus on building resilient systems as climate change alters conditions. About 180 professionals and volunteers attended the fully booked event and chose from four tracks to get advice on conservation + agricultural support programs.  WLVR
