COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Bethlehem Co-op board said that the long-awaited market at 250 E. Broad St. may not open this year—delays with installing refrigeration equipment and rising construction costs have slowed progress. The co-op is still installing key sections and raising funds through a $1 million capital campaign as it works toward its certificate of occupancy.  WFMZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Following Lehigh Valley Phantoms home games through early April, Allentown’s PPL Center will host several concerts and family events including a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show on Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Disney On Ice presentations from Dec. 11 to Dec. 14 — ticket prices range from about $25 to $150 while shows by Jason Aldean, Monster Jam, Harlem Globetrotters, Rod Stewart and HARDY are also scheduled.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • The 15th annual Oktoberfest presented by Lehigh Valley International Airport was held at ArtsQuest Campus at SteelStacks over two weekends and drew about 48,500 guests and nearly 200 volunteers. Organizers said the event featured live music, traditional games, dachshund races, and steinholding competitions—bringing the community together to celebrate German customs.  Bethlehem Press

  • LVEDC will host its Fall Signature Event 'Lehigh Valley: Making Products and Making Places' on Nov. 11 at Archer Music Hall in downtown Allentown, where executives from Crayola, Lutron Electronics, Mack Defense, C.F. Martin and Olympus will discuss innovations in manufacturing. LVEDC President Don Cunningham will moderate a panel and J.B. Reilly of City Center Group will deliver remarks — registration is required for this free event featuring product displays, musical performances, giveaways and a trivia contest.  Lehigh Valley Economic Development

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 30 employers will join Penn State Lehigh Valley's career fair tomorrow from 4 to 6 p.m. at 2809 Saucon Valley Road in Center Valley — the event helps local college students meet company representatives in fields like manufacturing, health care, IT, retail and engineering, while the addition of a new four-year engineering degree has drawn extra employer interest.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Rotary District 7430 hosted a three-day STEM Youth Explorers Academy from July 10 to 13—giving 54 students from 28 middle schools hands-on learning in science and teamwork with support from 20 Rotary Clubs. A celebration dinner and science fair on July 13 showcased Mars Habitat projects while District Governor Mary Cook presented certificates—plans are underway for the next event at Kutztown University.  Bethlehem Press
  • Elise M. Jones was hired as the new principal at Fountain Hill Elementary School — she brings over 15 years of public education experience from roles at Easton Area Middle School and Paxinosa Elementary School.   • At an Oct. 5 school board meeting, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Maureen Leeson recognized Clearview ES fifth graders for winning the Richard Check Steelworkers’ Archives Legacy Writing Contest—first place to Jadelyn Vega Ayala—while beginning discussion on a new electronic device policy that principals said improved classroom focus.   • At a BASD school board meeting on Oct. 6, BASD assistant superintendent Maureen Leeson announced the winners of the Steelworkers’ Archives Richard Check Legacy Writing Contest while Clearview ES educators were present (principal Heather Bennett-Knerr and teachers Jennifer Indalecio and Jeff Markham), and winners Arabella Zumba, Amelia Cortez, Emma Maderas and Amirah Daniello (first, second, third and honorable mention) had their winning essays exhibited.  Bethlehem Press
  • Lehigh students in Birthright and Tamid experienced a summer in Israel filled with chaos and resilience when missile sirens in Tel Aviv forced more than 100 people to run for shelter. They repeatedly took cover during alerts and experienced emergency relocations—one instance even involving a late-night bus ride—to safely complete their educational program.  The Brown and White

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Luke’s released its Community Health Needs Assessment on Monday at Nitschmann Middle School after surveying over 6,000 residents, with 52% of Bethlehem residents naming mental health as a top concern. Wendy Lazo said the report shows that mental health services are not equally covered and that the system needs reform.  WLVR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Data from the Greater Lehigh Valley Realtors shows that September home sales increased 3.7% to 589 units, median prices rose 2.5% to $352,500, and inventory dropped 3.7% to 806 units — buyers paid 100.6% of asking prices. Recent dips in mortgage rates below 6.5% are spurring more buyer interest and pending sales in the region.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Archer Music Hall and real estate professional Linda Dietrick were honored on Oct. 17 by the Lehigh Valley Commercial & Industrial Real Estate Foundation at a sold-out awards breakfast in Bethlehem—Archer is part of the downtown revival and Dietrick has worked in real estate since 1987.  Lehigh Valley Economic Development

  • Sophomore defender Paul Smajlaj returned to play after missing most of his first season because of a shoulder injury and two surgeries. He worked hard during offseason training and his teammates say his energy on the field has boosted Lehigh’s team play — his comeback shows strong resilience.  The Brown and White
