BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chocolate Works Lehigh Valley in Bethlehem Township is preparing a variety of sweets for trick-or-treaters this Halloween. Owner Pat Messman said the shop makes milk, white, and dark chocolate along with Halloween-themed lollipops and a custom haunted house-shaped chocolate (filled with candy) to meet the demand.  WFMZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Allen Distribution in Upper Macungie Township announced it will lay off 70 workers by year-end, which brings the Lehigh Valley total to 1,027 layoffs this year—surpassing last year's figure. CEO Don Cunningham said the logistics slowdown is expected to stabilize by next quarter + noting that 341,000 people are employed along with gains in manufacturing and tech.  WFMZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bethlehem Township Zoning Hearing Board denied three dimensional variances for the new St. Luke's medical building on Farmersville Road, rejecting requests to alter setback and street tree spacing requirements. The decision (following a brief private consultation) may delay the facility’s plans and requires the project to address a mislocated retaining wall that could cost $518,400 to rebuild.  WFMZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bethlehem Catholic swept Northwestern 3-0 in Monday’s 3A semifinals to set up a championship game today—at 5 p.m. in Catasauqua against Southern Lehigh, and coach Jess Attieh said the team is driven to win its first district title since 2022.  Bethlehem Press
  • Lehigh wrestlers earned an eighth place ranking in the NWCA preseason poll with 274 team points. The Mountain Hawks are set to face seven top-25 teams in upcoming dual meets, including No.1 Penn State + No.2 Nebraska.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • Freedom’s Brayden Boyle and Liberty’s Joshua Cazares qualified for the state cross country championships at DeSales University on Oct 22—Boyle finished 13th of 124 runners with a time of 17:23.6 and Cazares took 15th with a time of 17:31.4—and both will compete at states.  Bethlehem Press
  • At the District XI Class 3A Girls Cross Country meet on Oct. 22 at DeSales University, Emmaus’ Madelyn McCartney won in 18:02.5 while Liberty’s Elizabeth McClarin—who had been sick—finished second in 18:49.6 with Freedom’s Hannah Brodhead taking third and teams from Easton, Liberty and Freedom placing first, fourth and seventh respectively. Four athletes will compete at the PIAA State Championships on Nov. 1.  Bethlehem Press
  • District 11 postseason football begins today as teams face off over three nights with contests starting now and planned for Friday and Saturday—BASD Stadium will host the key match between Liberty and Freedom. Other matchups include Easton, Parkland, Nazareth and Bethlehem Catholic—adding extra excitement as teams adjust for the playoffs.  Bethlehem Press
  • Violet Alao, a Syracuse University senior interning at Lehigh Athletics, built the football team’s TikTok account from scratch—reaching over 1.1 million views by filming interviews and game-day content at Farrington Square.
