COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At the ATHENA Awards on Oct. 30 at ArtsQuest in Bethlehem, former Congresswoman Susan Wild and other local business leaders were honored for leadership, mentorship and their commitment to supporting working families. Wild, Veronica Gonzalez and MKSD Architects received their awards from the Women’s Business Council—an event that drew hundreds of community figures.  WLVR
  • United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley launched a Critical Support Fund in partnership with the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation to raise $500,000 so local food pantries can be stocked for three months as SNAP benefits expire today unless Congress acts. Local leaders say the fund is essential for more than 106,000 residents who depend on federal aid amid a government shutdown—prompting urgent calls for federal action.  Lehigh Valley Live

CRIME NEWS

  • UGI Utilities warned customers that scammers are using fake online ads (featuring phone numbers and websites not linked to UGI) to trick people into paying fees for gas leak investigations; UGI stressed it never charges for these services and urged customers to use only its official contact details.  Lehigh Valley Live

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jess Strassburg from Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts on Bethlehem’s South Side urged students to use their creative talents and show care in art and school work—helping them express themselves and learn through every project.  The Brown and White
  • Every Friday at Building C on Mountaintop Campus, Lehigh’s Aerial Swarms Club meets to plan and test aerial robot experiments. The club—founded in 2022 by Professor David Saldaña—brings together undergraduate and graduate students who build model blimps and drones to compete at Defend the Republic.  The Brown and White

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Shapiro Administration released a fact sheet today that nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians will lose SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown+713,000 children and 697,000 older adults are affected. Local food pantries in Bethlehem and surrounding areas are listed to help families in need.  WFMZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • NICU babies at LVHN are wearing festive Halloween costumes and cute, spooky gear that brightens the hospital. The event shows the hospital’s gentle celebration of the season—bringing smiles to families.  WFMZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Steel Ice Center will expand its facility near SteelStacks on East First Street with a third ice rink in a 34,000-square-foot project. Construction will begin in August or September 2026 and finish in fall 2027—improving available ice time for local youth and Lehigh men’s hockey teams while current schedules remain unchanged.  The Brown and White
  • Steph Lazo was named the new head coach of the Lehigh women’s lacrosse team on Sept. 15 after three weeks without a head coach. A former Penn State All-American, she will lead the team this spring with energy and care — building on their strong bonds and fresh strategies.  The Brown and White
