COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bethlehem Area Public Library’s Southside Branch held a used book sale on Oct. 22 and 23 at 400 Webster St. that raised $380 with most books priced between 50 cents and $2, and organizer Cassidy Mahony said she plans to hold three sales a year with the next one scheduled for the holiday season (Dec. 10 from 2 to 7 p.m. and Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).  Bethlehem Press

  • LVEDC’s 'Making Products & Making Places' event is drawing record interest as free registration runs until November 6 and the event will be held November 11 at Archer Music Hall downtown—where leaders from top manufacturing companies will share insights, run a trivia contest, and offer special giveaways.  Lehigh Valley Economic Development
  • Four Lehigh Valley startup businesses were among 13 companies in northeastern Pennsylvania to receive a share of over $1 million in investment from Ben Franklin Technology Partners from July to September — all four operate at the local Ben Franklin TechVentures incubator in Bethlehem. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Moravian Academy’s golf team closed its season after captain Mara Dubacher made history with her fourth straight district title following an 11-stroke win over Notre Dame, and the girls soccer team also ended on a high with a key win against Notre Dame. Students have enjoyed a Las Vegas-themed homecoming and Open Mic Night and will perform in a Coffeehouse show on Nov. 21—22 as they celebrate a busy autumn.  Bethlehem Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission approved conservation easements for 145 acres near Minsi Lake on October 27th for $2 to protect vernal pools and wild trout habitat in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and Northampton County. The land, part of the Minsi Lake Greenway, will remain open for fishing and wildlife movement—supporting local conservation efforts.  Lehigh Valley Live
  • A high wind watch is in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning for parts of Pennsylvania including Lehigh County—residents could see winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph that may knock down trees and power lines and disrupt travel, so officials advise watching for updates.  WFMZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • LVEDC President and CEO Don Cunningham and Easton Mayor Sal Panto Jr. were named to City and State Pennsylvania's 'Fifty Over 50' for decades of service that helped improve the region. Cunningham, who has led LVEDC since 2012, has boosted economic growth—while Panto’s long tenure has lowered crime and spurred key investments in Easton.  Lehigh Valley Economic Development

HEALTH NEWS

  • Thomas Dillon uses art to heal after a serious accident ended his previous career and now joins the Artist in Recovery Program at Cafe the Lodge, where he finds stability and creativity. Program director Ian Panico said the program helps community members living with mental illness gain job skills and express themselves—85% of art sales go directly to the artists.  The Brown and White

  • Lehigh women’s basketball upset University of Cincinnati 88-85 tonight to earn the Mountain Hawks’ first win of the season. Junior forward Whitney Lind scored 26 points and junior guard Jessie Ozzauto added 25, and the team will play Fairfield University on Nov. 8 then host La Salle University on Nov. 11.  The Brown and White
  • Lena Dogadalski, a first-year on the Lehigh women’s tennis team, advanced to the main draw of the ITA Regional Championships from Oct. 8 to Oct. 21 after wins over Rutgers' Xintong Zhou and Seton Hall's Jaden Davidson. She built confidence on the court—teaming with junior Maggie Forkner in doubles—and was hailed by her coach as a standout player this fall.  The Brown and White
